Watch Care 101: Keeping Your Timepiece Looking New

Watch Care 101: Keeping Your Timepiece Looking New

A good watch is built to last decades. Whether it does depends mostly on five small habits.

1. Clean it monthly

Wipe the case and strap with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For steel bracelets, a gentle brush with mild soap removes the grime that dulls the finish. Always check the crown is fully closed before any water goes near the watch.

2. Store it properly

Loose in a drawer is how dials get scratched and straps get creased. A watch roll or a dedicated case keeps each piece separated, padded and away from dust. If you own more than two watches, this is the best money you will spend on them.

3. Respect the water rating

5 ATM means splash and swim-proof, not sauna-proof. Heat and steam are the silent killers of gaskets. Take the watch off before hot showers and hot tubs.

4. Keep it away from magnets

Phone speakers, bag clasps and laptop lids can magnetise a mechanical movement and wreck its accuracy. If a watch suddenly runs fast, magnetism is the first suspect — a watchmaker can demagnetise it in minutes.

5. Service on schedule

Quartz movements want a battery and gasket check every two years; automatics want a full service every four to five. Every Ralph Christian timepiece is covered by a 12-month warranty, and proper care stretches that protection across a lifetime of wear.
