Watch Straps Explained: Silicone, Steel and Leather

Watch Straps Explained: Silicone, Steel and Leather

Swap the strap and you own a different watch. Here is the honest field guide to the three great strap families.

Silicone: the athlete

Waterproof, sweat-proof, nearly indestructible and comfortable from the first wear. Silicone is the default for sports chronographs because nothing else survives summer, gyms and holidays as gracefully. Its weakness is formality — it will never quite dress up.

Steel: the professional

A steel bracelet adds weight, presence and a jewellery-like finish. It breathes better than leather in heat, never stains, and ages by acquiring character rather than damage. It is the strap of boardrooms and wedding photos.

Leather: the romantic

Nothing matches leather for warmth and classic proportion, and nothing rewards care like it either. Keep it dry, rotate it with another strap to rest the hide, and it will develop a patina that makes the watch unmistakably yours.

The collector's rule

One case, three straps, three watches. A strap change takes a minute with the right spring-bar tool and transforms how a timepiece pairs with everything from a wetsuit to a wedding suit.
